The Senior Design Researcher is the consumer advocate who designs and leads research methodologies that will expertly uncover unmet design needs that will directly impact decision-making for Private Brands’ design and product strategies.
Create Design Research plans to expertly understand the consumer and balance the priorities between Private Brands Design and Product Strategy teams.
Conduct expert in-context design ethnographies to uncover unmet design actionable needs that will ultimately inform design, product strategy, and overall brand decision-making.
Design creative methodologies discussion guides, and activities that allow consumers to share functional and emotional insights and ideas.
Have conversations with consumers in person, on the phone or over Skype to understand unmet design needs that lead to design actionability.
Support design teams through product iteration with consumer and user insight, ensuring an effective design direction and strategy.
Lead synthesis of consumer insight, retail insight and market insight and share research findings and strategy to teams across Private Brands and to teams outside of Private Brands as needed.
Serve as the consumer expert and research consultant for REI Brands.
Stay connected to store managers and employees to continually understand our consumer, retail insights and expert product needs as well as build a strong relationship between Private Brands and retail stores.
Design research methodologies that are adaptive and can flex depending on evolving needs for design.

Bring your passion and expertise
4-year degree in design, psychology, art or related field preferred.
5 +years prior experience in a similar position.
Experience advocating for the VOC (Voice of the Consumer) throughout the research and design process
Demonstrated experience as an Expert Design Ethnographer/Interviewer with the ability to uncover unmet design actionable needs that will ultimately inform design, product strategy, and overall brand decision-making
Demonstrated experience designing research plans according to design needs and identified insight patterns across a variety of research sources
Experienced storyteller who clearly communicates insights & opportunities for design
Demonstrated ability creating relationships between agency and client, or between divisions in a large corporation
Demonstrated ability challenging the status quo, being a champion for change and the ability to influence others to change.
Demonstrated ability to lead teams through the synthesis of consumer insight, retail insight and market insight with cross-functional teams and the ability to effectively communicate research findings and strategy
Computer experience and knowledge of Microsoft applications required (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)
Demonstrated ability to support design teams through product iteration and evolution with consumer and user insight
Demonstrated ability to manage the development of multiple projects at varying levels of completion, difficulty, and size effectively during the same time.
Actively participates and collaborates with others on one's own team and across REI for the achievement of business goals.
Flexible in one's viewpoints and positions in order to support the direction taken by others at REI.
Uses business knowledge, innovative thinking, and sound judgment in the solution of problems or the pursuit of business opportunities.
