The Team: Morningstar`s Software Division is responsible for developing and delivering our core technology platforms and related services for institutions, financial advisors, and individuals. Key products include Morningstar Direct, a global research platform for institutions; Morningstar Advisor Workstation/Morningstar Office, a complete portfolio management and investment planning platform for financial advisors; and Morningstar.com, an investment website with research, data, and tools for individual investors. We also craft custom technology and data management solutions for financial enterprises seeking unique capabilities or deployments.

The Role: Morningstar is looking for experienced designers who are passionate about UI design, data visualization, and typography. We need designers who love the challenge of turning complex data into great communication design, translating usage patterns into intuitive interactions and workflows, and creating rewarding experiences for our client base of individual investors, financial advisors, institutional research analysts, planners, and financial services enterprises.

Interaction Designers work with software developers, project managers, product managers, and business owners to develop the next generation of our web-based applications and assist in the critical evaluation and continuous improvement of existing ones. These positions are based in our Chicago office.

Responsibilities + Help define user interaction models for new and existing products. + Sketch and present UI concepts, including visual design and behaviors with paper sketches, wireframes, task/workflows, simple working prototypes, or whatever form best communicates your ideas. + Participate in user-centered research with customers through focus groups, usage analysis, and rapid prototyping. + Communicate UI design solutions to multiple development teams through detailed specifications and similar types of communication documents.

Requirements + Advanced degree in interaction design (BS or MS in HCI, design, or a related field) or equivalent experience. + Demonstrated strong design skills, especially concerning typography, information hierarchy, and data visualization. + Expert understanding of UI design methodology and practices. + Expert knowledge of HTML. + Curiosity, a thirst to keep learning new technologies and methods, and a desire to build great products.
