The School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU) invites applications for one full-time (1.00 FTE), tenure-track, 9-month assistant professor position in the school’s Design research area (higher ranks may be considered depending upon the qualification of the successful candidate). Applicants must hold a doctorate in a relevant field.
The successful candidate is expected to initiate new funded research, as well as expand, complement, and collaborate with existing research programs in the School and the College of Engineering and beyond. Candidates are sought primarily in the areas of the design of medical devices or the design of new materials for advanced applications, although all areas of Design will be considered. Applicants should have an expert knowledge of mechanical design methods, fundamentals, and design thinking. Preference is given to candidates who will help augment the school’s design research areas while enthusiastically seeking interdisciplinary collaborations with other research areas of excellence within MIME such as robotics and advanced manufacturing, and with college-wide collaborations in materials science and bioengineering. Position responsibilities include teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and developing a sustainable, externally-funded and nationally recognized research program on issues surrounding industrial, energy systems, manufacturing, materials science and mechanical engineering. A PhD in Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing or Systems Engineering or related area is required. Postdoctoral and/or industry experience in a related field, is preferred. OSU is located in Corvallis, OR with approximately 26,000 students enrolled. The College of Engineering is the largest college with approximately 9,000 students. Within the School of MIME, there are over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students across the industrial, energy systems, manufacturing and mechanical engineering, robotics, and materials science programs. Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):
Typically requires PhD or terminal degree (Masters for some Extension positions and MLS for Library positions), demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom Extension, or other setting, and develop a research program in the academic discipline/unit.
Minimum/Required Qualifications for All Levels: • Applicants must have earned a PhD in Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing or Systems Engineering or related area prior to position start date. • Applicants must have demonstrated ability or significant potential for excellent teaching, leading and collaborating in innovative research, and attracting the necessary funding to sustain a vigorous research program are required. • Applicants must have proven oral and written communication skills. • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion.
Minimum/Required Qualifications for Associate Level: • Applicants must have a record of achievement in innovative research programs and publication activity. • Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to establish effective university/industry/government laboratory relationships. • Applicants must have developed and taught high quality undergraduate and graduate courses that focus on the multi-disciplinary nature of mechanical engineering.
Minimum/Required Qualifications for Full Level: • Applicants must have a record of national or international recognition and collaboration. • Applicants must have a record of service to the profession through organizing or governing committees of appropriate professional societies.
Additional Salary Information: $84,000-$104,000
