As a Designer at Pivotal, you will apply your craft on a range of products, services, and experiments. Some of your work will be very practical user interface design, applied to software products used every day by hundreds of thousands of people. Other work could be more generative explorations that you carry out in partnership across the organization in an evolving domain.

Who we are looking for

You are currently studying and/or practicing designing web or mobile applications. You enjoy collaborating with people and group problem solving. You are committed to lifelong design learning from research to user experience to visual design. You have a desire to work in agile teams practicing Lean UX, User Centered Design and Extreme Programming. You are a creative problem solver who is comfortable with uncertainty. You find a lot of value in delivering working software for people over pixel perfect designs.

What you’ll be doing

In this role, you will research, collate and synthesize user needs to help conceive, define, and evolve solutions for our users across a range of mediums and experiences. Your portfolio will show that you've worked on challenging projects across all steps of the design process: research, prototyping, and visual design. In addition you will be expected to:

  • Contribute to a team of multidisciplinary practitioners and help solve big and complex problems

  • Build and share empathy with people in order to deeply understand them and their needs

  • Advocate for users and delivering designs in a dynamic work environment

  • Advocate the benefits of design thinking to product teams

  • Help derive insights from data and build those into an actionable plan

  • Design and facilitate co-creation design workshops

  • Challenge teams to think bigger and act smaller

  • Present work, concepts and new ideas to senior leadership teams

Required Skills / Experiences

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program studying design thinking or have equivalent experience through self study or freelance work

  • A foundation in UX design with experience in one or more of the following: research, visual design, consulting

  • A portfolio (1 or 2 projects) that demonstrates some experience in UX and interaction design

Desired Skills / Experiences

  • Experience designing full-service consumer and business applications

  • Experience in user research methodologies and can educate others

  • Comfortable with public speaking and facilitating meetings with large crowds

  • Active member of the design community
